Yesterday, at the highly anticipated Ignite 2024 conference, Microsoft officially unveiled a new product named "Windows 365 Link." The device bears a resemblance to Apple's recently launched M4 Mac mini in appearance, but its internal operation differs significantly. Windows 365 Link is not a traditional local computer; instead, it relies entirely on cloud-based operations, marking Microsoft's official foray into the cloud desktop market.

During the event, Microsoft showcased this compact black box, which is roughly the size of an Apple TV. The back of the device is equipped with multiple ports, including USB-C, USB-A, DisplayPort, HDMI, and Ethernet. Additionally, Windows 365 Link supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, offering users convenient wireless connectivity options.

Although it looks similar to the Mac mini on the outside, the internal architecture of Windows 365 Link is entirely different. The device streams the Windows operating system from the cloud instead of running a local OS. This feature allows Windows 365 Link to have relatively modest hardware specifications, featuring 8GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and an undisclosed Intel processor. However, Microsoft emphasizes that these hardware specs are not crucial, as the built-in hardware primarily serves to stream cloud content.

Microsoft positions Windows 365 Link as the ideal solution for enterprise customers. Businesses no longer need to invest heavily in large and expensive hardware; instead, they can opt for this ultra-compact and affordable device and connect to the internet to enjoy high-performance computing through streaming services. This characteristic makes Windows 365 Link an ideal machine for running cloud virtual machines.

In terms of security, Microsoft states that Windows 365 Link offers significant advantages for IT consumers. All data is encrypted and stored in the cloud, ensuring that no offline-stored content can be stolen or breached by hackers. However, this also means that the device cannot function without an internet connection.

It is reported that Windows 365 Link will officially launch next year with a price tag of $349. Additionally, users will need to subscribe to the Windows 365 service, starting at $28 per month. This pricing makes it competitive compared to the Mac mini. However, it is worth noting that the Mac mini boasts superior hardware configurations and runs a local operating system.

Despite this, Microsoft remains confident about the prospects of Windows 365 Link. They believe that this new product will provide enterprise customers with a more convenient, efficient, and secure cloud desktop experience. As cloud computing technology continues to evolve, Windows 365 Link is expected to become a new choice for future enterprise office solutions.
