Creating Cartoon Images with Apple's Image Playground in iOS 18.2

2024-12-02

Apple has recently rolled out iOS 18.1.1, but the highlight is the image generation feature launched alongside iOS 18.2—“Image Playground”. This new tool in the Apple Intelligence series utilizes AI to transform text descriptions into cartoon-style images.

Image Playground is integrated into Apple Intelligence, enabling users to create cartoon-style images by entering text commands. This feature can be accessed through a dedicated image creation app or within the Messages app, where users simply click the plus (+) button adjacent to the text input field.

The feature is represented by an icon resembling a white cat or fox (or another plush animal, the exact design is yet to be determined) and is located on the device's home screen.

Using Image Playground is straightforward.

Users can describe the desired image in the text input area, for example, “A dog blowing out birthday candles in front of a cake”, and the AI will generate an image based on the description.

If the generated image does not meet expectations, users can refine the results by providing more detailed descriptions or selecting from Apple’s recommended options. The system will present multiple image choices for users to browse and select from.

Additionally, users can upload personal photos, such as those of pets or family members, to have the AI create cartoon versions of them with added elements like party hats or beach backgrounds, and choose from various artistic styles.

Currently, Image Playground is available as part of the iOS 18.2 public beta for users enrolled in Apple's beta software program. The feature is expected to be officially released to all users in December.
