OpenAI Event 7: ChatGPT Launches Projects Feature

2024-12-14

In OpenAI's "12-Day Launch Event," now on its seventh day, the company has introduced the Projects feature for ChatGPT, aiming to enhance users' efficiency in organizing and managing tasks while interacting with the chatbot. Essentially, Projects functions as a folder system, allowing users to upload files, set custom instructions, and categorize chats and data.

With the Projects feature, users can effortlessly view all project listings in the sidebar. When creating a new project, users can edit the project title, set colors for project icons, and add files and instructions to tailor ChatGPT’s responses to specific project needs. Additionally, users can incorporate previous chat histories into projects for easier tracking and management.

In demonstration videos, OpenAI staff showcased the Projects feature across various scenarios, such as organizing Secret Santa gift exchanges and managing household maintenance tasks. These examples illustrate that Projects provides a more organized and efficient method for project management, offering greater flexibility and convenience compared to traditional note-taking approaches.

Currently, the Projects feature is available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Teams users. OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, Kevin Weil, stated that the feature will be made available to free users shortly and is planned to be launched for enterprise and educational users at the beginning of the new year.

As part of OpenAI’s "12-Day Launch Event," the release of the Projects feature follows previous significant updates, including the Sora video generator, ChatGPT Canvas view, and the $200 monthly ChatGPT Pro subscription service. These updates demonstrate OpenAI’s ongoing efforts to enhance ChatGPT’s functionalities and services to meet the growing demands of users.
