Runway AI, a startup specializing in AI video creation tools, recently unveiled its latest feature, Act-One. This functionality enables users to capture facial expressions using their smartphone cameras and apply these expressions to AI-generated video characters.
Currently, the Act-One feature is accessible to users with a Runway account, provided their accounts have sufficient credits to utilize Runway's Gen-3 Alpha video generation model. The Gen-3 Alpha model supports various conversion modes, including text-to-video, image-to-video, and video-to-video transformations. Users can generate new videos by inputting descriptions or uploading images or videos.
While the Gen-3 Alpha model excels in video generation, it still has limitations in facial animation, particularly when creating facial expressions for characters that align with the emotional tone of a scene. Traditional facial animation relies on intricate motion capture techniques and manual facial rigging, which are both costly and time-consuming.
The introduction of Act-One aims to address these challenges. With this feature, users can transfer facial expressions to AI-generated characters without the need for expensive motion capture equipment, capturing subtle nuances such as micro-expressions and gaze direction. This functionality is ideal for creative professionals like animators, video game developers, and independent filmmakers, enabling them to create more realistic, cinema-quality video characters.
Runway states that the Act-One feature incorporates multiple built-in safeguards to prevent misuse. For instance, it includes mechanisms to block the unauthorized generation of content featuring public figures and tools to verify voice usage rights. Runway will continually monitor the usage of this feature to ensure it is employed responsibly.
Since the end of 2022, AI video technology has made significant strides in realism, resolution, fidelity, and adherence to instructions. However, many AI video creators still face challenges in depicting authentic facial expressions. The launch of Act-One offers a novel approach to overcoming this issue.
Furthermore, Runway has partnered with Lionsgate to collaboratively develop customized AI video generation models based on Lionsgate's extensive catalog of over 20,000 films. This collaboration is set to further advance the development and application of AI video technology.
Act-One streamlines the intricate process of traditional facial animation, eliminating the need for motion capture equipment or character rigging to achieve animated characters in various styles and designs. Users can simply provide a short driving video to transfer performances onto generated characters, even across multiple characters with different styles. This feature is poised to revolutionize narrative content creation, particularly in independent filmmaking and digital media sectors.
Cristóbal Valenzuela, Runway's co-founder and CEO, stated that Act-One is primarily focused on facial expressions, accurately capturing the depth of an actor's performance while maintaining versatility across various character designs and proportions. Additionally, Act-One is capable of delivering cinema-quality realistic outputs from a range of camera angles and focal lengths, enhancing creators' ability to communicate emotionally resonant stories through character performances.
