Pika Labs Unveils New AI Video Model, Expands Free Effects

2024-10-17

Pika Labs, also known as Pika AI, has raised $55 million and is further revolutionizing the video production industry with its namesake AI video model. Recently, the company expanded the free special effects features in its web-based AI image-to-video generator.

Pika Labs' latest AI video model, Pika 1.5, introduces new video effects such as shattering, dissolving, shrinking, and "magic disappearing." The "magic disappearing" effect allows objects in the video to vanish after scenes are set.

Users can simply upload images to the website, and Pika 1.5 will convert them into videos with corresponding animations. By selecting animations in the "Pikaeffect" button next to the "image" attachment icon (paperclip), which features a magic wand icon, users can choose the desired animation type.

The newly added AI effects, referred to by the company as "Pikaffects," are used alongside six other effects launched earlier this month: explosion, squeezing, melting, crushing, expanding, and "cake-ification." Among these, the "cake-ification" effect transforms any uploaded static image into a video with the question, "Is this a cake?" to which the answer is clearly "Yes!".

However, these new effects are currently unavailable as the website displays "High demand at the moment (an honor indeed)!"

Nevertheless, with the continuous advancements in the AI field, Pika's unique approach to video processing makes it stand out in the growing AI content generation sector.

Pikaffects cater to users seeking creative transformations, while traditional features such as lip-syncing and AI sound effects remain available in the early Pika 1.0 model. Paid subscribers can flexibly switch between Pika 1.5 and 1.0 based on project needs.

To accommodate diverse user requirements, Pika offers four subscription plans ranging from a basic free tier to an unlimited premium plan, each corresponding to different monthly video credit quotas and generation speeds. This flexible pricing structure is designed to cater to needs from small-scale experiments to large-scale productions.

Facing increasing market competition, Pika is striving to differentiate itself from competitors like Runway and Luma through its distinctive services. Meanwhile, Adobe has recently released the preview version of its enterprise-grade secure AI video model, Firefly Video. Like other similar companies, Pika has not disclosed the specific sources of its training datasets.
