Publication platform Medium will prohibit AI-generated content from participating in its paid partner program in a new policy that will take effect on May 1, 2024. All content and stories generated by artificial intelligence will no longer be eligible for payment and users may be removed from the monetization platform.
A leaked email addressed to current partners, posted by user @JonGillhams, emphasized that the platform is intended for "human storytelling, not AI-generated writing."
The Medium team stated that they have "recently defined and clarified specific policies regarding the different uses of AI-generated content and technology allowed in the Medium partner program."
Individuals have been informed that if they use AI to write complete articles or stories as partner members, they will have their work removed and may have their eligibility to join the program revoked.
The AI content policy differs for those who do not earn money from their work published on Medium.
In its policy, the US platform states that "disclosure for such AI-generated writing can be published normally if it is not behind a paywall, but it does not qualify for promoted publishing."
If the work is not properly disclosed, it will be limited to online publication only, thus not qualifying for broader publishing eligibility.
The publisher explains that they utilize various tools combined with human review to identify AI writing as part of a thorough detection process.
Medium celebrates reaching one million members
The policy update comes as the platform witnesses its website membership reaching one million for the first time.
Medium CEO Tony Stubblebine expressed gratitude to the members in a blog post, as this milestone occurred: "In our not-so-distant past, a million members seemed impossible. So for us, it's a combination of relief and disbelief: 'Wow, did this really happen?'... Thank you to every Medium member. Thank you for being part of this community. We're glad you're here."
