Sam Altman No Longer Owns or Controls Venture Fund Related to OpenAI

2024-04-02

According to the latest filing submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has officially transferred the formal management authority of the OpenAI Startup Fund to Ian Hathaway. This move aims to clarify the governance structure of the fund and eliminate any concerns about Altman's previous role as the interim head of the fund. The OpenAI Startup Fund was established in 2021, with Altman initially appointed as the interim head. However, a company spokesperson explained that this arrangement was only temporary and Altman personally did not invest in the fund nor have any financial interests. Now, the original general partner (GP) structure of the fund has been adjusted, and the management authority has been officially transferred to Hathaway. Since the establishment of the fund, Hathaway has been serving as a partner and has played a key role in overseeing the fund accelerator program and leading investments in multiple AI companies. The OpenAI Startup Fund has supported several AI startups, including Harvey, Cursor, and Ambience Healthcare. As of May 2023, the total committed investment of the fund has reached $175 million, with Microsoft being one of its major investors. The latest disclosed data shows that the total assets of the fund have increased to over $325 million. Previously, this unique governance structure raised concerns among some former board members. However, OpenAI insists that an independent investigation conducted after Altman's brief departure in November 2023 revealed no improper behavior regarding product safety or company finances. As the company continues to address the challenges of AI innovation and commercialization, the adjustment in the leadership of its investment division undoubtedly sends a clear signal to the outside world of its commitment to ethical governance and responsible management. Under Hathaway's leadership, the fund will continue to support promising AI startups by providing favorable terms and early access to OpenAI's cutting-edge technology.
