NVIDIA RTX Remix Beta Brings Modern Graphics to Classic Games

Nvidia's RTX Remix tool is now in public beta, allowing modders to enhance old games using AI texture tools, ray tracing, and Nvidia DLSS 3. This is a tool for enhancing the visual effects of Portal through upgraded textures, models, and improved lighting. It is also something the modding community can use to remake Half-Life 2, making the game look more realistic and have better textures. Now it is available for all users to try, and it should be able to upgrade more games. However, not every classic game is compatible with RTX Remix. Nvidia states that the tool is best suited for DirectX 8 and 9 games with a fixed-function pipeline, including Call of Duty 2, Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, Garry's Mod, Freedom Fighters, Need for Speed: Underground 2, and Vampire: The Masquerade-Bloodlines. The modDB website provides a complete list of compatible games. Nvidia states that RTX Remix provides an application that allows users to create lighting and inject remastered resources into the game, along with a runtime for "capturing classic game scenes and re-injecting remastered resources into the game during playback." One of the core features of RTX Remix is a generative AI tool that uses Tensor Cores in GeForce RTX GPUs to analyze low-resolution textures and "generate physically accurate materials." The resolution of these textures can then be increased up to four times. Users can also utilize physically-based rendering (PBR) so that textures can properly "respond" to ray-traced lighting. In addition, RTX Remix allows users to combine ray tracing, DLSS 3, and Nvidia Reflex (which is said to reduce latency) for a thoroughly remastered gaming experience. While these tools should make it easier for users to remaster games, Nvidia points out that RTX Remix is not a "one-click" solution, as some textures may appear too smooth or lack gloss if the additional assets are not properly upgraded. "The generative AI texture tool can help you convert textures into physically accurate materials," Nvidia says. "But the most impressive RTX Remix projects, such as Portal With RTX, Portal: Prelude RTX, and Half-Life 2 RTX: An RTX Remix Project, are filled with carefully crafted high-quality resources with a large number of polygons and realistic materials." This means that completing a full game remaster may take some time for the development team.
