Google Launches "Ask Photos" Feature for Select Users

2024-10-08

According to reports, Google is gradually rolling out a new feature called "Ask Photos" to selected users. This feature enables users to interact with their photo libraries using natural language, handling complex queries such as searching for past years' Halloween costumes or the dates when their children learned to swim. Earlier, Google had opened the waitlist registration for this feature in early September.

The "Ask Photos" feature appears to have begun rolling out to some users on the waitlist in the United States. This server-side update allows users to access the feature without downloading a new version of the application. Once enabled on a user’s account, it appears as a new tab in the bottom bar of the Google Photos app, replacing the original "Search" tab. However, users can still search for images using the traditional method, but they must first pose a question within "Ask Photos."

When opening "Ask Photos" for the first time, the system prompts users to review how the feature operates and the data it requires access to. It also asks users to confirm certain details, such as ensuring the accuracy of individuals' names. Additionally, users need to establish the relationships between people and pets, which appear to be organized based on the frequency these individuals or animals appear in the photo library.

Based on the limited testing so far, "Ask Photos" handles queries involving people and locations quite effectively, but its performance is average when addressing questions about events or specific objects. For instance, inquiries about moving dates might yield inaccurate results, whereas asking for photos of meetings with colleagues can reliably display relevant recent images. Location data appears to be utilized to help narrow down search parameters, thereby enhancing accuracy.

Nevertheless, the "Ask Photos" feature is not yet available to all users. Those who have registered on the waitlist in recent weeks may soon be able to experience the service. Currently, the feature is limited to users in the United States. Interested users can sign up for the waitlist through the official Google website.
