Threads, a Twitter competitor, expands keyword search globally

According to a TechCrunch report on November 30th, Meta's emerging Twitter competitor, Threads, has expanded its keyword search feature to all markets where the application is currently available. This move indicates that Threads is increasingly enhancing its competitiveness. Initially tested in English-speaking countries including Australia and New Zealand, keyword search was launched in August and rolled out to most English and Spanish-speaking markets in September. Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced this week that search now supports "all languages" on Threads. With the feature now widely used, Threads becomes more useful to its nearly 100 million monthly active users worldwide. Keyword search allows users to quickly find relevant content without relying solely on algorithm-driven feeds. Threads to Launch in the European Union The reason for this news is that Threads is reportedly set to launch in the European Union, one of its few untapped major markets. Citing sources familiar with the plans, The Wall Street Journal states that Threads may initially introduce a view mode in Europe, allowing users to read posts without an account. Offering the keyword search feature before entering the European Union will enable Threads to immediately serve a diverse user base in the region. However, global availability also caters to Threads' operations in over 100 countries. Based on user feedback, Threads is catching up to Twitter's core features through continuous updates. In recent months, the application has added features such as chronological feed, web access permissions, polls, support for topic tags, and profile switching. However, Threads lacks one of Twitter's main distinctive features - trending topics for real-time news discovery. Instagram head Mosseri confirmed that unlike Twitter, Threads does not emphasize amplifying breaking news. Nevertheless, the influx of a large number of former Twitter users may influence the future direction of the application. With the achievement of globalized keyword search, Mosseri stated that more search improvements are on the way. Currently, Threads still blocks certain search terms. Threads' ambition aligns with the increasingly fierce competition led by Elon Musk's Twitter. Despite Twitter currently having nearly 550 million monthly active users, Threads still has room for expansion with its launch in Europe and other regions dominated by Twitter. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg expects Threads to potentially gather one billion users one day, positioning the application as Meta's next potential breakthrough hit.
