OpenAI Launches New Feature: ChatGPT Users Can Easily Invoke GPTs

2024-01-31

OpenAI is driving the adoption of its AI model-driven third-party application GPT by allowing ChatGPT users to invoke GPT in any conversation.

Currently, paying users of ChatGPT can introduce GPTs into their conversations by typing "@" and selecting GPT from a list. The selected GPT will understand the entire conversation and can be "tagged" for different use cases and requirements, jumping into the conversation with the context of what has been said before.

OpenAI said in a tweet, "This way, you can add relevant GPTs based on the complete context of the conversation."

After launching the GPT Store, a marketplace for GPT accessed through the ChatGPT interface, OpenAI has taken measures to make GPT more discoverable. Creating GPTs does not require coding experience, and developers can create simple or complex GPTs according to their preferences. Some currently available GPTs include AllTrails' Trail Recommender, Khan Academy's Code Tutor, and Canva's Content Designer.

OpenAI plans to introduce monetization for developers who want to sell access to their GPTs. However, the company may need to increase traffic first. According to Similarweb data, customized GPTs account for only 2.7% of ChatGPT's global web traffic, and the traffic for customized GPTs has been declining monthly since November last year.

Regulation is another challenge. In the first week after its launch, the GPT Store was filled with romantic chatbot applications, some of which had sexual implications, clearly violating OpenAI's guidelines.

OpenAI claims to flag GPTs by combining manual and automated review and has removed some non-compliant applications. However, if the number of GPTs grows as the company hopes, this problem is likely to become more severe.
