"Unity Report Reveals: Over 60% of Game Studios Utilize AI in Development"

2024-03-20

Unity engine manufacturer has released a new report revealing the widespread application of AI in the field of game development. According to the report, up to 62% of surveyed game studios are using AI to varying degrees to drive their development work. This finding is particularly noteworthy as it comes in the context of recent negative feedback on the use of AI in the gaming community. Looking back to December last year, an official Xbox Twitter account attempted to use AI to generate promotional images, but the results were comical, with details such as children having beards and objects having strange shapes. While this may have been the decision of individual employees rather than a company-wide action, it is understandable that fans were disappointed, especially when the tweet was meant to celebrate independent game development. Earlier this year, Wizards of the Coast, the developer of Magic: The Gathering, also encountered difficulties when trying to use AI to create promotional images. Nevertheless, the majority of game studios using AI have fully explored the potential of this technology in areas beyond marketing. The report from Unity specifically points out that the surveyed studios primarily use AI in key areas such as prototyping, concept design, asset creation, and world building. The report further explains that as the game development cycle continues to lengthen, with the average time to market in 2022 being 218 days and increasing to 304 days in 2023, studios are actively using AI to simplify certain complex processes and improve efficiency. Among the surveyed developers, 46% stated that they use AI to improve character animation, 37% utilize AI to accelerate code writing, and 36% rely on AI to generate artwork, design levels, test game loops, or automate narrative elements. Overall, a staggering 71% of studios using AI reported a significant improvement in their operational efficiency. Specifically among the 62% of surveyed game developers, 56% are using AI for game world building. Within this group of developers, 64% use AI to help create non-player characters (NPCs), while 54% utilize AI to create "unique gaming experiences." Unity also further inquired about the types of game creation that AI-using developers primarily serve, with AR/VR games (29%), online multiplayer games (28%), casual games (27%), and open-world games (25%) being the most common choices. In contrast, first-person shooter games (15%), puzzle games (16%), and educational games (19%) were mentioned less frequently. However, the report also reflects some studios' conservative attitudes towards AI technology, which contrasts with the active embrace of new technologies by companies like Square Enix. Unity's report, based on a survey conducted in 2023, shows that 38% of studios have not yet implemented AI for various reasons. These reasons include time constraints (43%), lack of relevant technical skills (24%), and "lack of understanding of the potential applications of AI" (20%). However, the percentage of studios that have not adopted AI may have decreased since 2023. It is foreseeable that the application of AI in the game development field is a trend. Its scope extends beyond the development stage to post-release support work, such as NVIDIA's AI upgrade technology and Microsoft's recently announced AI optimization tools. The deep application of AI technology undoubtedly brings more possibilities for innovation and development opportunities to the gaming industry.
