Google Chrome M121 Introduces AI Features for Smarter Browsing

2024-01-24

Google Chrome browser has made improvements in the latest M121 version, introducing three new AI features aimed at making browsing easier, more efficient, and more personalized.

These new features are currently available as experimental options for Chrome users on Mac and Windows PCs in the United States. They leverage Google's advanced machine learning and AI technology to automate and enhance common tasks such as organizing tabs, creating custom themes, and writing text on the web.

Tab Manager: A New Way to Manage Tabs

One of the new features is called "Tab Manager," which automatically groups and labels similar tabs based on content and context, reducing the confusion and clutter that often occurs when too many tabs are open at once. Users can access this feature by right-clicking on a tab and selecting "Organize Similar Tabs" or by clicking the dropdown arrow on the left side of a tab. Chrome also suggests names and emojis for new groups, making them easier to find and switch between.

Another feature called "AI Creation" allows users to quickly generate custom Chrome themes based on selected themes, moods, visual styles, and colors. Users can choose from a variety of options, such as the "Aurora" animation style with a "tranquil" mood, and see how Chrome renders it. This feature uses a text-to-image diffusion model previously introduced in Android 14 and Pixel devices for creating generative AI wallpapers. Users can access this feature by clicking the "Customize Chrome" button in the bottom right corner of a new tab, then selecting "Change Theme" and "AI Creation."

The third feature, called "Help Me Write," will be introduced in the next Chrome update, and it assists users in drafting text on the web. This feature uses a generative AI model to suggest how to refine, expand, or change the tone of the text, depending on the user's preferences. Users can access this feature by right-clicking on a text box or field on any website and selecting "Help Me Write."

Google Chrome's AI Ambitions and Challenges

These new features are part of Google's ongoing efforts to bring the latest AI and machine learning innovations to Chrome, the world's most widely used web browser with a global market share of 62.85% across all device types. Chrome has previously added AI features such as real-time video captions, malicious website detection, permission prompt management, and webpage key point generation.

Google states that these new features are early public experiments and are currently disabled for enterprise and education accounts. Users who want to try them out can log in to Chrome, select "Settings" from the three-dot menu, and navigate to the "Experimental AI" page.

The new features have received mixed reviews from users and experts, with praise for the convenience and creativity of the AI tools, but also concerns about privacy, security, and accuracy. In our brief experience with the updates, we found that the Tab Manager feature sometimes grouped unrelated tabs together or didn't work at all.

Google assures that it is committed to ensuring user privacy and security and does not collect or store any personal information from the AI features. It also states that it is continuously improving the quality and reliability of its AI models and welcomes user feedback to help refine these features.
