OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Voice for Interactive Voice Chat Experience

2023-11-22

OpenAI has announced that the voice feature of ChatGPT is now available for free to all users. In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), OpenAI stated that users can now click on the headphone icon to engage in voice conversations with ChatGPT and receive audible responses within the mobile application.

In September, OpenAI initially introduced the ability to use voice and image prompts with ChatGPT, but this feature was only available to paying users.

This announcement comes at a time when OpenAI employees are grappling with the sudden dismissal of their CEO and the turmoil surrounding his return negotiations. OpenAI even jokingly mentioned this ongoing event in the X post.

In an example, someone asked ChatGPT, "Our team has been working late, and we're hungry. How many 16-inch pizzas do I need to order for 778 people?" OpenAI has roughly the same number of employees, most of whom have recently threatened to resign unless the entire board steps down.

Last week, the OpenAI board dismissed co-founder and CEO Sam Altman due to "his lack of consistent candor in communication with the board." Subsequently, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella invited Altman and his team members to establish a new division within the tech giant, but Altman may return to OpenAI.

Former OpenAI President Greg Brockman resigned after Altman's dismissal, and he reposted OpenAI's announcement on X, stating, "Give it a try - it completely changes the ChatGPT experience." According to reports, Brockman is also open to returning to OpenAI.
