Anthropic Launches University AI Chatbot Program

2025-04-03

Anthropic announced the launch of a new educational version of Claude on Wednesday, aiming to compete with OpenAI's ChatGPT Edu initiative. This latest version is tailored for higher education, offering access to Anthropic's AI chatbot Claude for teachers, students, and other staff members while adding several innovative features.

One standout feature of the educational version of Claude is "Learning Mode," a new tool within Claude Projects designed to help students develop critical thinking skills rather than simply providing answers to questions. When Learning Mode is activated, Claude asks follow-up questions to assess understanding, highlights key principles behind specific problems, and provides useful templates such as research papers, outlines, and study guides.

The educational version of Claude could potentially boost Anthropic’s revenue. The company reportedly generates $115 million in monthly revenue and aims to double this figure by 2025 while directly competing with OpenAI in the education sector. Anthropic has traditionally aligned its offerings with OpenAI’s products, and the release of the educational version of Claude is no exception.

Anthropic stated that the educational version of Claude comes equipped with a standard chat interface along with enterprise-grade security and privacy controls. In a press release shared with TechCrunch before the announcement, Anthropic mentioned that university administrators could use Claude to analyze enrollment trends and automate responses to repetitive inquiries. Additionally, the company recommended that students can utilize the educational version of Claude to solve calculus problems step-by-step under the guidance of the AI chatbot.

To assist universities in integrating Claude into their systems, Anthropic revealed a partnership with Instructure, a company that provides the popular education software platform Canvas. Furthermore, the AI startup has also collaborated with Internet2, a nonprofit organization offering cloud solutions for higher education institutions.

Anthropic disclosed that it has reached "university-wide agreements" with Northeastern University, the London School of Economics, and Champaign College, allowing all students to access the educational version of Claude. Northeastern University is serving as a design partner, working alongside students, faculty, and staff to establish best practices for AI integration, AI-powered educational tools, and frameworks.

Through initiatives like the new Student Ambassador and AI "Builder" programs, Anthropic hopes to secure additional contracts, capitalizing on the growing trend of students using AI in their studies. A 2024 survey by the Digital Education Council found that 54% of college students use generative AI weekly. These partnership agreements for the educational version of Claude may help Anthropic familiarize more young users with its tools while being compensated by well-funded educational institutions.

It remains uncertain what impact AI might have on education or whether it is a desirable addition to classrooms. Research findings are mixed, with some studies suggesting AI can serve as an effective tutoring tool, while others indicate it might harm critical thinking skills.
