Adobe has recently rolled out an update for its video editing software, Premiere Pro. The latest version, 25.2, introduces a range of new AI-powered features designed to enhance the efficiency and quality of video editing.
Among these updates, the standout feature is Generative Extend, a tool first announced in October and now among the initial applications of Adobe's Firefly generative AI video model. This functionality allows users to extend video clips by up to two seconds, providing more flexibility for transitions or correcting unintended movements without needing to reshoot footage. Now capable of generating 4K-quality video, it also extends environmental background audio separately for up to ten seconds or synchronously with video for two seconds. However, this feature does not support voice or music tracks.
For now, Generative Extend is available free of charge for a "limited time." Afterward, it will require Firefly generative credits. Creative Cloud subscribers receive between 25 and 1000 credits per month, depending on their subscription plan. Users can also purchase additional Firefly credit subscriptions starting at $10 for 2000 credits monthly. While Adobe hasn’t disclosed the exact credit cost for using Generative Extend, it mentioned that pricing will vary based on video format, frame rate, and resolution.
The new version of Premiere Pro also includes an AI-driven search panel that automatically identifies clip content within video libraries, enabling users to find specific shots through text-based descriptions like "a close-up of hands working in the kitchen." Additionally, the new Premiere Color Management feature automatically converts log and raw files into SDR or HDR without lookup tables, streamlining the editing process while introducing a new wide color gamut pipeline.
Another highlight is Premiere Pro’s new ability to translate video captions into 27 languages via AI. Editors can now display multiple subtitle tracks simultaneously during edits. Adobe also confirmed that this update improves performance and speed for Apple silicon and Windows devices.
In addition to Premiere Pro, Adobe released After Effects 25.2, which brings enhanced HDR monitoring, advanced animation controls, support for 3D FBX models, and animated ambient lighting effects. A newly optimized high-performance preview playback system leverages both RAM and local disk caching instead of relying solely on RAM, making it easier to handle longer compositions seamlessly.
