Apple's Initial Batch of iOS 18 AI Features to Run Exclusively On-Device
According to reports, iOS 18 will be the biggest update for iPhone introduced by Apple, as they plan to introduce a range of new AI-related tools at the system level. Multiple reports have made it clear that the iPhone will benefit greatly from generative AI and is expected to bring significant improvements to Siri and Spotlight search. While Apple is working to integrate this technology into both new and old models of the iPhone, a well-known analyst has stated that the initial AI features will not rely on AI cloud servers on the iPhone.
It is expected that the AI tools in iOS 18 will primarily be processed on the device, although some features may be released in the future. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg mentioned in his latest Power On newsletter Q&A section that the initial AI features introduced for the iPhone will not rely on cloud servers, meaning that the iPhone will be responsible for processing the upcoming tools. The company plans to announce software updates for developers and the public, including iOS 18, watchOS 11, macOS 15, at WWDC 2024 event on June 10, which will include a significant amount of new AI integration.
Gurman further pointed out that the initial AI features in iOS 18 will be entirely processed by the software on the iPhone, which means that the iPhone 15 series and other compatible older models will be able to utilize these new technologies without any hardware limitations. However, with the launch of the iPhone 16 series, which will feature more powerful neural engines, we may see some dependencies on the new chips to support the AI capabilities of iOS 18. From WWDC in June to the release of the iPhone 16 series in September, developers will have ample time to test the new technologies and further optimize them through deeper integration.
Recent reports also emphasize that Apple has not involved cloud components in handling the upcoming large-scale language models. It is worth noting that Apple is actively ensuring procurement transactions for AI servers and this technology may change its approach in the future, as previously reported by industry analysts Ming-Chi Kuo and Jeff Pu.
Apple plans to officially unveil iOS 18 and a series of software updates prepared for the entire product line at the annual WWDC event on June 10. Although significant new tools are expected to be released, the company does not intend to include its AI-driven chatbot in this release. However, once the technology matures, Apple may introduce related products to compete with competitors such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini. Whether different AI enhancements will be provided based on iPhone models remains to be seen.
