Chief Scientist of OpenAI Ilya Sutskever Announces Departure from Company
OpenAI confirmed this news in a press release. Six months ago, Sutskever, along with other board members, led the farce of firing CEO Sam Altman, but a few days later, it backfired.
On Tuesday afternoon, Sutskever tweeted, "After nearly a decade, I have decided to leave OpenAI. I am excited about what's next - it's a project that is very meaningful to me, and I will share details at the appropriate time."
"Ilya and OpenAI are parting ways," Altman later tweeted. "This makes me sad; Ilya is undoubtedly one of the greatest figures of our generation, a guiding light in our field, and our dear friend."
Altman went on to say that Jakub Pachocki, a senior researcher on Sutskever's team, will replace him as OpenAI's Chief Scientist. Sutskever noted that an undisclosed project is "meaningful" for his future development. It is currently unclear what this project is.
According to The Information, Jan Leike, another OpenAI executive who collaborated with Sutskever to protect the future of artificial intelligence, also resigned on Tuesday. Leike and Sutskever led OpenAI's Super Alliance team, responsible for ensuring that the company's super powerful AI does not oppose humans.
Sutskever's position at OpenAI has been unclear for the past six months. When Altman returned to the company in late November 2023, he said about Sutskever, "We hope to continue our working relationship and are discussing how he will continue his work at OpenAI." Sutskever was the only member of OpenAI at that time who was neither fired nor rehired.
Since then, Altman has refused to answer questions about Sutskever's position in the company in multiple interviews. During this time, we have received almost no news from Sutskever himself. This is Sutskever's first tweet in over five months, and the Chief Scientist of OpenAI has been absent from major announcements such as Sora and this week's GPT-4 Omni.
Earlier this year, OpenAI founding member Andrej Karpathy left the company. In this case, Karpathy also did not provide specific reasons for his departure, later describing that he would be working on personal projects.
