"AI Girlfriend Dominates GPT Store, Leaving OpenAI in Distress"

2024-01-18

OpenAI's new GPT store has seen a batch of AI girlfriend robots, which has attracted the attention of the technology company. Within a few days of the launch of the GPT store, at least six "girlfriend" AI chatbots, including "Ai.Eva," "My Demon Girlfriend," "My Virtual Girlfriend," and "Your Girlfriend Tiffany," appeared on the platform.

According to OpenAI's policy, it does not "allow GPTs to be used specifically for cultivating romantic partners or engaging in regulated activities." It stipulates that any tool deemed "inappropriate for minors," including "sexually suggestive or teasing content," is not allowed. However, at the time of writing this article, girlfriend robots still exist on the platform.

Some apps have been taken down, but it seems that creators are starting to play with the titles, using "sweetheart" instead of "girlfriend."

OpenAI has already blocked certain explicit terms, so it appears to be cracking down on some elements. When asked one of the robots a question like, "What romantic things do you want to do tonight?" it gave a generic answer about staying in for the night.

What other AI chatbots are there?

It has been reported that platforms specifically for AI companions have surged in popularity over the past year. The AI chatbot app Replika, which is promoted as "an AI for anyone who wants a friend without the difficulty of choice or social anxiety," has been downloaded over 10 million times.

Meta has also created a series of AI robots that mimic historical figures and famous characters. From socialite Paris Hilton and entrepreneur and reality TV star Kendall Jenner to former NFL star Tom Brady, these AI companions were launched in the United States in September.

Character.AI, an AI chat startup founded by former Google researchers, has received $150 million in funding from Anderson Horowitz and added multiple AI companions and friends to a shared group chat feature in October.

There are already some AI chatbots related to romance, such as Digi, which is referred to by its creator as the "future of AI romantic companions." After it was exposed by X, the app's downloads skyrocketed.
