AI Film Festival Showcasing the Future of Cinema

One of the leading companies in the field of artificial intelligence video generation, Runway AI, organized an AI film festival.

The 10 selected short films showcased the filmmakers' rich imagination, with their stories taking place in stunning aesthetics of the universe.

Runway's co-founder and CTO, Anastasis Germanidis, said, "There is a notion that AI-driven film production and creation have a very specific style."

However, he stated at the awards ceremony on Thursday that each selected film "feels completely different from other films."

Over the past 50 years, film production and animation have made significant progress. When watching these AI short films, people are reminded of past movies such as "Inception," "The Matrix," and "Loving Vincent."

But the latest technology allows films to be made with a small fraction of the typical film budget, and anyone with a computer and software can create them.

With just a prompt, Runway can transform a series of static images into short videos or turn photos into paintings.

In February of this year, OpenAI, a leading company in the generative AI field, launched its video creation software called Sora. Google and Meta are also developing their own versions, named Lumiere and Emu, respectively.

Not Yet Perfect

In the short film that received an honorary award at the festival, Leo Cannone used the AI application Midjourney to generate hundreds of images, which were then animated using Runway, undergoing numerous edits in the process.

Current AI technology still has limitations in certain areas, especially in providing multiple camera angles and creating perfect human-speaking characters.

The French director mentioned, "I really can't have (human) characters or dialogue, so it sets the aesthetics of the film." The short film tells the story of what happens after a grandmother's death (spoiler: they turn into giants).

"The AI-generated visual effects still have many flaws in each scene, so I have to do a lot of fixing. It's not something that can be directly used straight out of the software," he said.

Runway's co-founder, Alejandro Matamala, admitted that this technology is not yet perfect.

"If you want a realistic human character... we're not that advanced yet. But what we're saying is that there are many different types of storytelling," he said.

Huge Transformation

Runway is currently developing an AI system called "Universal World Model," which simulates real-world environments by predicting the development of future events in dynamic settings.

The three co-founders of Runway do not come from a computer engineering background; they studied art-related fields at New York University.

These three individuals focus on creating a "universal language" for programming and creativity, using Apple and Pixar as examples.

"For emerging filmmakers like me, this represents a real opportunity to disrupt the typical Hollywood industry," said Carlo De Togni, who also won an award at the festival.

"Artists can present new stories to the audience with limited funds," he pointed out, with some generative AI platforms offering subscription fees as low as $30 or $50 per month.

In the future, "independent productions may become closer to some Hollywood productions, and maybe they can really compete with them," the Italian director said.

This prospect of a huge transformation in the film industry has made Hollywood so uneasy that actors and writers went on strike for several months last summer, demanding protection from the impact of generative AI and other grievances.

For De Togni, this technology will eventually become the norm, and more importantly, "your ideas, your thoughts" when using these tools to turn visions into reality.

AI film production has replaced the work currently done by various professionals, putting industry jobs at risk.

However, Runway's co-founder and CEO, Cristobal Valenzuela, said that automation is "really happening all the time, but the work itself will change."

"That's the role of technology - to allow us to change."
