DuckDuckGo Launches Anonymous AI Chat Feature - No Need to Worry About Data Training

2024-06-07

DuckDuckGo has now launched a private AI chat feature that allows you to access AI models such as GPT-3.5 Turbo and Claude 3 Haiku anonymously. DuckDuckGo guarantees that it will not store any of your chat records, and the companies providing the AI models are also prohibited from using these records for training purposes, so you don't have to bother going into the settings menu to opt out. To ensure the anonymity of your chat, DuckDuckGo will make the chat model calls on your behalf and replace your IP address with DuckDuckGo's own IP address. DuckDuckGo explains, "This way, the requests appear to come from us, not you." However, DuckDuckGo also reminds users that AI service providers "may temporarily store chat records," but they cannot link these records to your identity. DuckDuckGo's privacy policy page explicitly states that all metadata containing your personal information, including your IP address, will be deleted before sending queries. DuckDuckGo has also reached agreements with AI service providers to ensure that stored chat records are deleted within 30 days and are not used to train their models. Similar to DuckDuckGo's browser, you can use the "Clear" button to erase your chat records. In addition to GPT-3.5 and Claude, DuckDuckGo's AI chat also provides access to Meta's Llama 3 70B model and Mixtral 8x7B. You can use DuckDuckGo's AI chat feature by visiting the duck.ai website or using the "!ai" or "!chat bang" shortcuts. Furthermore, it can also be found on the top menu bar of the DuckDuckGo search engine (of course, you can also disable it in the settings menu). This feature is currently available for free within daily limits, but DuckDuckGo states that it may introduce a paid plan in the future, offering higher usage limits and access to more advanced models. DuckDuckGo also plans to add more chat models, including models hosted by DuckDuckGo or users. Last year, DuckDuckGo introduced the DuckAssist feature in its search engine, which automatically provides AI-generated answers, similar to Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini.
