Recently, xAI, the AI company founded by Elon Musk, disclosed in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that it has successfully raised $6 billion. The funding round attracted 97 investors, each contributing at least $77,593, though their identities were not revealed. Following this, xAI announced a list of participating institutions, including Andreessen Horowitz, Blackrock, Fidelity, Kingdom Holdings, Lightspeed, MGX, Morgan Stanley, OIA, QIA, Sequoia Capital, Valor Equity Partners, Vy Capital, Nvidia, and AMD.
Adding to the $6 billion raised earlier this year, xAI's total funding now stands at $12 billion. Reports suggest that xAI aims for a valuation of $50 billion, which is double its valuation from six months ago.
According to the Financial Times, only those who participated in xAI's previous funding round were eligible for this round. Additionally, it was reported that investors who helped Musk acquire Twitter received up to 25% of xAI's shares.
Founded by Musk last year, xAI launched its flagship product, the generative AI model Grok. Grok has become central to several features on X (formerly known as Twitter), including chatbots available to X Premium subscribers and free users in certain regions. Grok is described as "rebellious," willing to answer "spicy questions" that most other AI systems would decline. Compared to systems like ChatGPT, Grok may be more direct and bold in its responses, but it also avoids certain sensitive political topics.
In the past year, Grok has been deeply integrated into the X platform. Initially, it was only accessible to X users and required developer skills to use its open-source version. Now, through integration with the open-source image generator Flux, Grok can generate images on X (though this feature is controversial). Additionally, Grok can analyze images and summarize news and trending events, although the accuracy needs improvement.
Reports indicate that Grok may take on more functions on the X platform in the future, including enhancing search capabilities, optimizing profile descriptions, and providing post analysis and reply settings.
In the competitive landscape of generative AI, xAI is striving to catch up with strong rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic. Last October, xAI launched an API, allowing customers to integrate Grok into third-party applications, platforms, and services. Furthermore, xAI released a standalone Grok iOS app for test users.
The legal dispute between xAI and OpenAI has also garnered significant attention. xAI has accused OpenAI and its partner Microsoft of "actively trying to eliminate" competitors, including xAI, and "obtaining commitments from investors not to fund xAI." xAI also claims that OpenAI unfairly leverages Microsoft's infrastructure and expertise.
xAI envisions using its models to process data from Musk's companies, such as Tesla and SpaceX, to enhance their technological capabilities. It is reported that xAI has provided customer support features for SpaceX's Starlink internet service and is in talks with Tesla to develop revenue-sharing arrangements.
However, Tesla shareholders have opposed these plans, arguing that Musk is diverting talent and resources from Tesla to xAI, a competitor. Despite this, xAI has generated approximately $100 million in annual revenue through collaborations with other companies and products aimed at developers and consumers. In comparison, Anthropic is expected to generate $1 billion in revenue this year, while OpenAI plans to reach $4 billion in revenue by the end of 2024.
xAI is currently training the next generation of the Grok model at its Memphis data center, which was reportedly built in 122 days and partially relies on portable diesel generators for power. xAI plans to upgrade the data center next year and aims to double its current 100,000 Nvidia GPUs.
To secure more power, xAI has obtained approval from the Memphis Light, Gas, and Water Division to increase its power supply by 150 megawatts, enough to power about 100,000 homes. However, this move has drawn criticism from some residents, who argue it will strain the grid and worsen air quality.
Since its inception, xAI has rapidly expanded from a dozen employees to over 100. The company has also moved into the former San Francisco Mission District headquarters of OpenAI.
It is reported that xAI has informed investors of plans to raise additional funds next year.
The massive funding activities in the AI sector continue. Anthropic recently received a $4 billion investment from Amazon, bringing its total funding to $13.7 billion, while OpenAI raised $6.6 billion in October, increasing
