Recently, OpenAI has undergone a comprehensive brand image upgrade, featuring new fonts, logos, and color schemes. The design philosophy behind this transformation was elaborately explained during an interview with Wallpaper magazine.
The new logo shows subtle differences from the old version, requiring careful observation to notice. Through side-by-side comparison, it can be seen that the center space of the new "flower" logo is slightly larger, with lines that are more streamlined and smooth.
According to Wallpaper, although the original logo was designed by OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman and co-founder Ilya Sutskever, this rebranding effort was led by an internal design team headed by Veit Moeller and Shannon Jager, aiming to create a brand image that is "more organic and humanized".
As part of the rebranding, OpenAI also introduced a new font named "OpenAI Sans-serif". This font "combines geometric precision and functionality with rounded and friendly features". OpenAI now uses this font in its brand identity, where the outer contour of the letter "O" is perfectly round, while the interior appears slightly irregular, "to counterbalance any robotic precision, making the overall feel more human", Moeller said in an interview with Wallpaper.
When asked whether OpenAI used its own AI tools, such as ChatGPT, to design the new brand image, Moeller stated that the team only utilized these tools to assist in calculating different font weights.
OpenAI's designers mentioned: "We collaborate with top experts in photography, typography, motion design, and spatial design, while integrating AI tools like DALL·E, ChatGPT, and Sora as creative partners. This dual approach - combining human intuition with the generative potential of AI - enables us to create a brand that is not only innovative but deeply embodies humanity."
