In the latest version of Google's Files app, users can activate the Gemini assistant while viewing PDF files and get options to ask questions about the document. According to tech news, this feature requires a subscription to the Gemini Advanced service. Mishaal Rahman reported last Friday that the feature is being gradually rolled out.
When users activate Gemini in the Files app and are viewing a PDF, a "Ask about this PDF" button appears. Clicking this button allows users to ask questions about the file content, similar to using ChatGPT for PDF inquiries. Google first introduced this screen-aware functionality at its I/O developer conference in May this year.
Rahman shared a screenshot of the feature, showing the actual user interface.
Additionally, other context-aware features of Gemini include asking about web page content and YouTube video information. For apps or file types that do not support Gemini's context awareness, the assistant will instead answer questions about the current screen by taking a screenshot. After clicking "Ask about this screen," Gemini captures the screen image and provides answers based on it.
