LG Launches New Gram Laptop Series with AI Language Model

2025-01-02

LG Electronics recently announced that it will unveil a range of sleek and lightweight laptops featuring integrated small language models at the upcoming CES Consumer Electronics Show next week.

The new lineup includes the flagship 16-inch Gram Pro 16Z90TS. This laptop is available with Intel's ultra V series, also known as Lunar Lake, processors. These processors are specifically designed for energy-efficient notebooks equipped with AI software.

Lunar Lake processors consist of three chip modules: a central processing unit, a neural processing unit for running AI models, and a graphics processing unit. The GPU also includes circuits optimized for machine learning. According to Intel, the combination of the NPU and GPU can deliver up to 115 TOPS (trillion operations per second) when running AI applications.

The Gram Pro 16Z90TS is LG's first laptop to support Microsoft's Copilot+ standard, which was introduced in May. This standard provides additional AI features in Windows for notebooks that meet specific hardware requirements, along with enhanced cybersecurity features.

The Lunar Lake processor in the Gram Pro 16Z90TS supports up to 32GB of LPDDR5X memory, a type of RAM optimized for energy-efficient laptops. Users can also configure up to 2TB of flash storage.

LG also unveiled a second model, the Gram Pro 17Z90TR, which offers the same memory and storage options as the Gram Pro 16Z90TS but comes with a larger 17-inch display. This model is powered by Intel's Arrow Lake series processors, which offer improved performance at the cost of some energy efficiency. Users can also opt for an Nvidia GeForce RTX4050 discrete graphics card, which outperforms the built-in GPU of the Intel processor.

The new laptop series from LG also includes the 2-in-1 Gram 16T90TP and the entry-level Gram Book. The Gram 16T90TP has specifications similar to the 17-inch Gram Pro 17Z90TR and can be used as a tablet. The Gram Book, on the other hand, combines a 15.6-inch display, an Intel Core i5 processor, 16GB of RAM, and up to 1TB of flash storage.

LG will equip these laptops with an AI feature called "Time Travel," designed to help users quickly locate previously browsed web pages, documents, and multimedia files. This feature works without an internet connection and is supported by a small large model from the LG EXAONE series of algorithms.

The EXAONE 3.5 algorithm includes four language models with up to 32 billion parameters. All models can handle prompts containing up to 32,000 data units, each consisting of several letters or numbers. LG claims that the smallest EXAONE 3.5 model, with 2.4 billion parameters, outperforms several similarly sized algorithms, including Llama 3.2 2B and Google's Gemma 2 2B, and delivers higher output quality than Microsoft's Phi-3-small model, which has nearly three times the number of parameters.

Additionally, LG will provide a second AI feature called Gram Chat Cloud, which uses OpenAI's GPT-4o large language model to assist users in browsing the web.
