Last year, ChatGPT made its debut on the popular messaging app WhatsApp, accessible by dialing 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478). Since then, this service has undergone numerous enhancements and new features, mirroring those found on the official website or app version of the chatbot. One of the most notable additions is that the WhatsApp variant of ChatGPT can now process image inputs in addition to text.
Specifically, users of the WhatsApp version of ChatGPT can now send or attach photos, whether taken with a mobile camera or selected from a gallery. ChatGPT will analyze these images and respond in textual form. Beyond sending text and images, users can also transmit voice messages to ChatGPT via WhatsApp. After processing the audio, ChatGPT responds in text within the chat. This feature is particularly useful when users are on the go and lack the time or convenience to type out messages.
Starting January 5, OpenAI introduced an account linking feature for ChatGPT users on WhatsApp. Users with Plus, Free, and Pro subscriptions can now directly link their existing ChatGPT accounts to WhatsApp. For those with paid subscriptions (Plus or Pro), this offers higher usage limits and potentially more advanced models depending on the subscription tier.
Even free users benefit as OpenAI recently granted them access to some advanced reasoning models. Essentially, account linking ensures that the functionalities and capabilities associated with a user's ChatGPT subscription are available when using Meta's instant messaging application. However, ChatGPT is not the sole AI assistant on WhatsApp; Meta's own AI chatbot is also available. Many other AI chatbot developers have entered this space, including Microsoft's Copilot.
In terms of availability, recent updates have been rolled out to all users, including those in India, one of WhatsApp's largest user bases. OpenAI stated that these updates aim to foster inclusivity, making ChatGPT accessible to more users, especially in countries like India.
