OpenAI CEO Rejects Musk's Acquisition Proposal, Calls It a Move to Slow Progress

2025-02-12

During the AI Action Summit in Paris, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed in an interview on Tuesday that Elon Musk's informal proposal to acquire the non-profit arm of OpenAI for $97.4 billion was perceived as an attempt to "slow down OpenAI's progress."

Altman stated, "Musk is clearly our competitor." He noted that Musk has raised substantial funds for his AI company xAI and is competing with OpenAI on a technical level.

Altman also joked that Musk's life appears to be perpetually in a state of instability and suggested he might not be a happy individual.

On Monday, Altman had already swiftly rejected Musk's acquisition offer in a public post, and it seems increasingly likely that the OpenAI board will formally turn it down. However, this decision may not happen immediately. On Tuesday, OpenAI board member Larry Summers mentioned in an interview that apart from media reports, he had received no official notification regarding this acquisition proposal.
