Instagram to Launch AI Video Editing Feature for Easy Element Modification

2024-12-20

Instagram is planning to launch a video editing feature powered by generative AI next year, based on the Movie Gen AI model developed by its parent company, Meta. With simple text commands, users will be able to modify almost any element in a video. This feature aims to provide creators with more tools to transform content and bring their ideas to life, without requiring professional video editing skills.

According to a preview shared by Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, the feature can be adjusted through text prompts. The demonstration included changes to Mosseri's attire, background, and appearance, even showing him transformed into a felt-like doll. Other modifications were more subtle, such as adding new objects to the existing background or placing a gold chain around Mosseri's neck without altering the rest of his outfit.

While the preview clips appeared smooth and natural, with no unnatural distortions even during rapid arm or facial movements, these clips were very short, lasting only a few seconds. Given that OpenAI's Sora video model, which also had an impressive early preview, did not fully meet expectations upon release, the true performance of Instagram's AI video tool remains uncertain until its official launch.

In October, Meta unveiled the Movie Gen AI video generator, claiming it can "preserve human identity and motion" in created or edited videos. Although it was initially announced that the tool would not be made available to the public, this update indicates that Instagram will be the first platform to utilize this text-to-video model.

It is worth noting that Meta's release of Movie Gen comes several months after competitors like OpenAI and Adobe, which have already launched similar models, Sora and Firefly Video, respectively. Firefly has already been integrated into Premiere Pro as a test feature for text-to-video editing.
