Consulting firm Accenture has recently observed that full-stack technologies including robotics hardware, software, and AI models designed for creating machine autonomy in human environments are continuously evolving. In its "Technology Vision 2025" report, the company states: "In the coming decade, we will start seeing robots interacting casually and ubiquitously with humans, solving unplanned tasks through reasoning and taking independent actions in any environment."

Wall Street firm Morgan Stanley estimates that by 2040, there could be 8 million humanoid robots in the United States, increasing to 63 million by 2050. The company notes that besides technological advancements, long-term demographic changes leading to labor shortages may also drive the development and adoption of humanoid robots.

Despite technical challenges, humanoid robot development faces social challenges as well. Without addressing these issues, public skepticism towards humanoid robots could hinder their adoption even in areas where they clearly offer benefits. For successful deployment, humanoid robots need to be perceived as trustworthy and seen as beneficial to society.

To address trust issues, researchers are exploring ways to make robots appear more approachable. For instance, Japanese engineers have created a mask using human skin cells and attached it to a robot. A study published last summer showed that human-like faces and expressions can enhance communication and empathy in human-robot interactions, making robots more effective in healthcare, service, and companionship roles. In other words, a human-like appearance increases trust.

Besides appearing trustworthy, humanoid robots must consistently exhibit ethical and responsible behavior to gain human acceptance. For example, humanoid robots equipped with cameras in public spaces might inadvertently collect sensitive data like conversations or facial details, raising concerns about surveillance. Establishing policies that ensure data transparency is crucial for mitigating these risks.
