OpenAI has recently announced on its official platform that the macOS version of the ChatGPT application has received a significant upgrade. This update allows developers to edit code directly within integrated development environments (IDEs) such as Xcode and VS Code, aiming to streamline the coding process and enhance productivity.
With the newly introduced "Collaborate with Apps" feature, users can now interact with ChatGPT directly in Xcode and other IDEs for coding and problem-solving. This function automatically identifies the active editor and provides contextual assistance accordingly. For instance, while editing code, developers can summon ChatGPT using the shortcut CMD+Z to engage in dialogue and receive suggestions for code adjustments, or even modify settings like file colors.
In addition, the update introduces an "Auto-Apply" mode, where ChatGPT can edit code directly without additional authorization, further enhancing operational convenience. A video released by OpenAI team member Alexander Embiricos demonstrates practical use cases of this feature, showcasing how ChatGPT offers real-time support during the development process.
This update is currently available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers. Enterprise, Education, and free users will gain access over the next week. OpenAI stated that Windows users will also soon experience this functionality.
Notably, OpenAI plans to expand this feature from IDEs to more Mac applications, gradually rolling it out to all Mac desktop users, including free users. In the future, ChatGPT is expected to become a comprehensive desktop assistant on Mac systems, offering users more convenient features.
Meanwhile, the industry is closely watching Apple's moves. Reports indicate that Apple is developing a conversational Siri to assist developers with Xcode projects. However, this feature is not expected to launch until 2027, meaning ChatGPT could maintain its leading position in the developer tools market for some time.
