Recently, General Motors announced a significant personnel appointment by hiring 49-year-old Barak Turovsky as its first-ever Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer. This move marks a crucial step for GM in promoting the comprehensive application of artificial intelligence technology across vehicles and business operations.
Turovsky brings extensive experience in the AI field, having previously led Cisco's (CSCO.O) AI division and held key roles within Google’s technical teams. After joining GM, he will become part of the company's software and services engineering team, reporting directly to Senior Vice President Dave Richardson.
In 2024, General Motors made important adjustments to its software organization, promoting several executives, including Richardson, to oversee innovation and development in the software domain. The appointment of Turovsky as Chief AI Officer further underscores GM’s commitment to investing in artificial intelligence technology.
Richardson stated in a press release, "Artificial intelligence is critical to GM’s future, particularly in areas like electric vehicles, internal combustion engines, and autonomous driving technologies. Turovsky’s expertise and experience will significantly accelerate our efforts in AI, improving product performance, optimizing operational processes, and enhancing customer experiences."
Turovsky’s team will focus on integrating advanced AI software functionalities into GM’s vehicle lineup while also participating in other innovative projects. GM has already utilized AI to assist in selecting EV charging station locations, streamline vehicle order processing for dealers, and optimize manufacturing processes, achieving remarkable results.
This appointment not only highlights GM’s emphasis on AI but also demonstrates its determination to drive digital transformation and innovation. With Turovsky onboard, General Motors is expected to achieve further breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, delivering smarter and more efficient mobility solutions to consumers.
