Google has recently updated its Gemini app for iOS and iPadOS, introducing a new set of lock screen widgets designed to enhance the accessibility and speed of interacting with the AI assistant's various features. According to tech media reports, this update includes six new widgets, each directly linked to a specific function within Gemini.
This move is considered part of Google's strategy to attract iPhone and iPad users away from Siri or encourage them to choose Gemini over OpenAI's ChatGPT when interacting with large language models. Additionally, Google has been promoting Gemini on podcasts focused on Apple technology.
In the meantime, Apple's progress in developing a smarter and more capable version of Siri has been slow. As reported by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, a full upgrade of Siri may still be years away. Therefore, it makes sense for Google to push the promotion of Gemini now to build user familiarity. In the coming months, Apple might even offer Gemini as an additional resource for Apple Intelligence.
Here are the details of the new widgets:
- Text Prompt: Quickly type in questions to receive instant answers.
- Live Conversation: Engage in real-time voice conversations or brainstorming sessions with Gemini.
- Microphone Activation: Easily activate the microphone to set reminders, create calendar events, and more.
- Camera Usage: Capture images and ask Gemini for related information.
- Image Sharing: Select photos to obtain more details, generate new artwork, or start a conversation.
- File Sharing: Share files to exchange information or inspiration and ask relevant questions.
It’s worth noting that Google launched a standalone Gemini app for iOS back in November, separating it from the main Google Search app.
