Recently, Google is accelerating its artificial intelligence (AI) development by consolidating various teams responsible for AI services, platforms, and tools.
According to Logan Kilpatrick, the product lead of Google's AI Studio developer platform, who posted on X platform, the Google AI Studio team along with those developing APIs for the Gemini model series will be integrated into Google DeepMind. DeepMind was formed in 2023 through the merger of Google DeepMind and the Google Brain team from Google Research, serving as the driving force behind several recent AI innovations at Google, including Gemini.
Kilpatrick mentioned that this consolidation will deepen collaboration among teams and expedite the transformation of research findings into developer tools, while maintaining their original mission.
Jana Dogan, an engineer joining DeepMind from one of the affected teams, also posted on X platform stating that this reorganization would enable more diverse public outputs from DeepMind. She revealed plans for upcoming high-quality APIs, more open-source projects, and additional tools.
Google has not yet responded to TechCrunch's request for comment.
Previously, Google had already moved the team responsible for Gemini chatbot, which powers the Gemini series models, under DeepMind. At that time, Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that the restructuring aimed to speed up Google's AI development process.
In recent months, Google has also transferred teams focused on models, research, and AI ethics to DeepMind.
Based on audio obtained by CNBC from a December all-hands meeting at Google, Pichai noted that although the Gemini chatbot is gaining momentum, Google needs to put in significant effort in 2025 to close gaps and establish leadership. He emphasized that expanding Gemini's presence in consumer markets will be a key focus for Google in 2025, urging internal recognition of the current urgency and the need for accelerated actions given the high stakes involved.
