Google Meet now supports note-taking for you.

If you have ever missed an important meeting due to being busy with other tasks, Google's new artificial intelligence feature may be able to help you - but only if you are a user of Meet.

This feature, called "Smart Notes", was initially launched in April as part of Google Workspace's AI meeting and messaging plugin, which charges $10 per user per month and includes an automatic translation tool.

Google announced more details about Smart Notes in a blog post on Thursday. According to Google, this feature allows users to "put down their pens and focus on the conversation instead of taking notes". It analyzes the meeting content in real-time, highlights key points as the discussion progresses, and generates a comprehensive summary that is easy to understand at the end of the meeting, which is then distributed to the participants by the meeting host.

These notes are particularly helpful for understanding the content of meetings that you missed or were late for due to unforeseen circumstances, or for providing actionable meeting highlights to participants.

Google states that Meet will store the documents in the meeting host's cloud storage folder and adhere to any retention policies set by your organization.

The Smart Notes feature will be available to customers with Gemini Enterprise, Gemini Education Premium, or AI meeting and messaging add-on accounts. Only users with one of these licenses can use this new feature. It is combined with other Duet AI features such as facial recognition, automatic caption translation, noise reduction, and video enhancement.

The AI note-taking feature is enabled by default, but system administrators can control whether their users can use this feature. To switch this feature, go to the Admin Console and open "Apps" > "Google Workspace" > "Google Meet" > "Gemini settings".

If you want everyone in your organization to have immediate access to this feature, Google recommends turning off this setting and then turning it back on after the rollout.

Google states that the rollout of the new feature is being done gradually, starting on Tuesday, August 13th, and is expected to be completed by August 21st.
