Stability AI, the hot startup behind Stable Diffusion, has appointed a new CEO as part of its comprehensive restructuring. According to The Information, Prem Akkaraju, former CEO of visual effects giant Weta Digital, will take over the struggling AI startup, marking a significant shift in its leadership and strategy.

This transformation comes at a time when Stability AI is facing significant financial challenges, including increasing debt and disappointing revenue figures. Insiders revealed that the company generated less than $5 million in revenue in the first quarter of this year, with losses exceeding $30 million. Additionally, Stability AI is said to owe nearly $100 million to cloud computing providers and other creditors.

This leadership change comes with a crucial lifeline: a new round of funding led by a group of investors, including tech entrepreneur Sean Parker. Parker is renowned for co-founding Napster and serving as the first president of Facebook. He will also serve as the Chairman of Stability AI's board, potentially leveraging his extensive network in the technology and entertainment industries to open new doors for the company.

According to insiders, this investment is being referred to as a "restructuring." It is expected to significantly alter Stability AI's ownership structure. While specific terms have not been disclosed, such transactions typically involve new investors obtaining preferential terms and a substantial amount of equity, often at the expense of existing shareholders. This move could dilute the holdings of previous investors, who have already invested over $100 million in the company, including prominent firms like Coatue Management and Lightspeed Venture Partners.
