IBM Launches New Mainframe System for the AI Era

2025-04-08

IBM has unveiled the latest iteration of its mainframe hardware, the IBM z17, which is designed to accelerate the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies through a series of innovative enhancements.

The IBM z17 is powered by the new IBM Telum II processor and features full encryption. It supports over 250 AI use cases, including intelligent agents and generative AI, among other cutting-edge fields. Although mainframe systems are often considered traditional technology, 71% of Fortune 500 companies still rely on such systems. Market Research Future predicts that the mainframe market reached $5.3 billion in size by 2024.

The IBM z17 boasts significant performance improvements, capable of handling 450 billion inference operations daily—an increase of 50% compared to its predecessor, the IBM z16 (based on the original Telum processor). The system offers high compatibility, enabling seamless integration with various hardware, software, and open-source tools.

Tina Tarquinio, Vice President of IBM Z Product Management and Design, revealed that the development of the z17 began five years ago, predating the current AI boom driven by OpenAI's ChatGPT. Over 2,000 hours of research and development were invested, along with feedback collected from more than 100 clients. She noted that this feedback aligns closely with the current trends in the AI market.

With the rapid evolution of AI technologies, the IBM z17 has been designed with ample room for expansion. At launch, the system will support 48 IBM Spyre AI accelerator chips, with plans to increase that number to 96 within the next 12 months. Tarquinio emphasized that this forward-thinking design allows the z17 to adapt flexibly to future changes in the AI market, whether it involves larger models or those requiring more local memory.

In terms of energy efficiency, the IBM z17 excels as well. According to Tarquinio, the system delivers a 7.5x improvement in AI acceleration performance at the chip level while consuming only one-fifth of the power used by similar accelerators.

The IBM z17 mainframe will officially hit the market on June 8, delivering enhanced support for enterprise-level applications in the AI era.
