Microsoft Unveils "Generative Erase" Feature; AI Editing Comes to Windows

2024-02-23

Google and Samsung are not the only companies that have integrated the amazing AI-powered selective photo erasing feature into their devices. They will soon be available as desktop tools for Windows PCs as well. Microsoft has just released the "Generative erase" feature, which allows you to perform similar operations in the built-in Photos app on Windows.

In the image, you can see how Microsoft uses generative AI to make the dog's leash and some distractions in the photo disappear:

While this may not be as magical as other AI technologies you have seen, you don't need to buy a new Pixel or Galaxy to incorporate it into your life. Microsoft has stated that it will not only promote this feature to Windows 11 but also backport all AI editing capabilities for photos to Windows 10 and Windows 11 for Arm64 devices, including the background removal feature.

However, these tools are currently only available for Windows Insiders. Microsoft states, "This update has started rolling out to all channels of Windows Insiders, including Windows Insiders in the Windows 10 Release Preview channel. Please make sure to update your app to version 2024.11020.21001.0 or higher."

The company's blog post does not specify whether AI-edited photos will have metadata or watermarks to distinguish them from unedited ones.
