Microsoft's Recall AI feature to open for trial in October

2024-08-22

Microsoft recently announced that the highly anticipated Recall AI feature is expected to be available for testing by Windows Insiders in October. This decision marks a clear timeline for Recall, which was originally planned to be released in June alongside Copilot Plus PC but was delayed due to security concerns. Looking back at the delay announcement on June 13, Microsoft promised to provide a preview of Recall to members of the Windows Insider program in the "coming weeks." However, the actual release date was extended to the "coming months." Pavan Davuluri, the head of Windows and Surface division, officially confirmed in a recent blog post, "We are committed to delivering a reliable and secure Recall (preview) experience on Copilot Plus PC, and it is now scheduled to be available for testing by Windows Insiders in October." Recall utilizes the built-in local AI technology in Windows 11 to capture screenshots of most of the content users browse or interact with on their computers, allowing them to quickly retrieve these items through search. Additionally, an intuitive timeline feature enables users to easily review their work history for a specific day and browse all related snapshots. Despite Microsoft's emphasis on the security and privacy protection of Recall, security researchers have discovered that its database is not encrypted, posing a potential risk of access by malicious software. To address this, Microsoft is making significant adjustments to Recall, including making it an optional feature instead of enabled by default, encrypting the database, and introducing the Windows Hello authentication mechanism to enhance security. Regarding the reasons for the further delay in Recall's release, Davuluri did not directly specify. However, he emphasized, "Security is always our top priority. When Recall becomes available to Windows Insiders in October, we will publish a detailed blog post providing more information." This suggests that Microsoft may need more time to thoroughly test the security improvements of Recall. It is worth noting that this delay may indicate a postponement of Recall's full release until later this year. Microsoft typically conducts rigorous testing of new features through the Insider program for several weeks to months before promoting them to a wider user base. Therefore, the specific launch date of Recall will depend on its performance and feedback after the October testing release.
