Musk Sues OpenAI and CEO Altman for Breach of Contract

The CEO of X, Elon Musk, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI last Thursday, accusing the organization of deviating from its original mission and becoming a de facto subsidiary of Microsoft.

According to Musk, OpenAI is no longer a force working for the benefit of humanity, but has transformed into a profit-driven entity that maximizes the gains for the tech giant.

In the lawsuit, Musk argues that under its new board leadership, OpenAI is actively developing and improving general artificial intelligence (AGI) with the primary goal of increasing Microsoft's profits.

Musk is taking legal action against OpenAI, alleging breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, and unfair business practices. He is pushing for OpenAI to return to its open-source roots and seeking an injunction to prevent OpenAI, as well as its President Gregory Brockman, CEO Sam Altman, and Microsoft, from profiting off the company's AGI technology.

This alleged departure from the founding agreement has raised concerns about the use of GPT-4. Musk claims that GPT-4 has shifted from benefiting humanity to being proprietary technology serving Microsoft's economic interests.

The lawsuit highlights the abandonment of OpenAI's original non-profit structure in favor of a profit-oriented CEO and a board lacking sufficient technical expertise in AGI and AI public policy.

"The carefully designed non-profit structure that OpenAI once had has been replaced by a profit-driven CEO and a board with poor technical expertise in AGI and AI public policy. The board now has an observer seat specifically reserved for Microsoft," Musk said.

Musk points out that Microsoft's influence in OpenAI has grown to the extent that the board now has a dedicated observer seat for the tech giant.

Musk was an original board member of OpenAI until his departure in 2018, and he asserts that the dispute between the board and Altman centers around the progress of GPT-4 and the potential future iterations of AGI technology. Musk is concerned about the implications of these developments for public safety.
