Google Gemini's Voice Chat Mode Launched

2024-08-14

Google announced at the Pixel 9 launch event that it has introduced a new voice chat mode called Gemini Live for its Gemini platform. This feature is specifically designed for Gemini Advanced subscribers and works similarly to ChatGPT's voice chat feature. Users can choose from multiple voices and engage in conversations, even interrupting without clicking any buttons. Google states that conversations with Gemini Live are "free-flowing," allowing users to interrupt or pause during the response and continue later. Gemini Live can also run in the background or be used when the phone is locked. Google first announced the launch of Gemini Live at this year's I/O developer conference and revealed its ability to interpret video content in real-time. Gemini Live adds voice chat functionality to Google's AI assistant. Google also offers users 10 new Gemini voice options, including voices named Ursa and Dipper. This feature is currently being rolled out for Android devices in English. Google states that it will launch on iOS platforms and support more languages in the "coming weeks." In addition to Gemini Live, Google also announced other features for its AI assistant, including new extensions for apps like Keep, Tasks, Utilities, and YouTube Music. Gemini will also have the ability to perceive screen context, similar to the AI features announced by Apple at this year's WWDC conference. After clicking "Ask about this screen" or "Ask about this video," Google states that Gemini can provide relevant information, including extracting destinations from travel videos and adding them to Google Maps, among other detailed functionalities.
