Microsoft has launched the Seeing AI application to help blind and visually impaired individuals understand the world around them. Originally available only for iPhone, the application has now been updated to include an Android version and additional generative AI components.
Seeing AI is a conversational application that tells users what it sees when they open it and select a mode. Its most impressive feature is the short text mode, which can read out any text fragment captured by the camera viewfinder. This can help people find signs, read product labels, and more.
The application can also recognize currency denominations, barcodes, colors, and even faces. By default, it can only provide information on the number of faces, their distance, and their expressions. Users can also teach the application the names of their friends, enabling it to call them by name in the future.
There is also a document scanning mode that allows users to browse a page and hear all the text. While this feature already existed, the generative AI has made it even more powerful by enabling the application to answer questions about the document. According to Microsoft, this was a highly requested feature.
Seeing AI can be downloaded for free from the Play Store and Apple App Store. This free application supports 18 languages.
