Dell Technologies has signed a beneficial contract worth $150 million with Imbue, an AI startup that aims to build personal computers with AI agents.

Under this deal, Dell will provide server services to Imbue, which are crucial for processing large datasets required for developing advanced AI systems and building models with complex reasoning capabilities. Imbue recently raised $200 million in funding and stands out among AI startups as it independently builds its AI foundational models from scratch, a resource-intensive effort that requires significant computing power.

While industry leaders like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon actively pursue partnerships with AI startups through investments and cloud computing arrangements, Dell positions itself as a smaller player, emphasizing the potential benefits of its server business in the AI field.

Matt Baker, Senior Vice President of Dell's AI Strategy, expressed the company's desire to support dynamic innovation in the AI field, stating, "Our entire business is transforming to support what we believe is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The innovation being driven by generative AI is on par with the advent of the internet."

Unlike AI startups typically engaging in cloud transactions for computing services, Imbue's agreement with Dell involves upfront purchase of computing hardware. Imbue believes this approach is not only cost-effective but also provides greater flexibility, preventing overreliance on any single large tech company like Amazon or Google.

Josh Albrecht, Co-founder and CTO of Imbue, emphasized the decision to collaborate with Dell, explaining, "The main reason we chose Dell is that we didn't want to be locked into one computing provider. It allows us to maintain independence."

Baker emphasized that Dell's partnership with Imbue demonstrates that AI startups have options beyond turning to public cloud providers. He said, "These are things you can actually own, install, and innovate on your own."

Imbue and Dell have collaborated on designing a custom system that includes smaller server clusters for rapid experimentation in AI system development. Additionally, a larger cluster is customized for building foundational models—a general AI system adaptable to various tasks. Imbue's computing system is managed by Voltage Park.

Founded in 2021, Imbue is currently valued at over $1 billion and actively developing early prototypes of AI tools called "agents." These agents are designed to autonomously perform complex tasks such as analyzing code errors, interpreting lengthy documents, and ultimately planning vacations without user supervision. Imbue's ultimate goal is to create agents with advanced reasoning capabilities to assist engineers in coding and aid analysts in drafting policy proposals.
