Microsoft releases latest preview version of Windows 10, now available to try out Copilot feature

2023-11-23

Microsoft allows Windows 10 users to try out the Copilot feature, which was previously only available in Windows 11. The software giant announced last week that Copilot will be introduced to Windows 10, and testers can now use the operating system with the Copilot feature in the Release Preview version.

The way Copilot works in Windows 10 is very similar to its appearance in Windows 11, with a button on the right taskbar that invokes an AI-powered chatbot to answer questions and generate text. Due to the absence of certain skills or operations in Windows 10 that exist in Windows 11, there are some subtle differences in functionality.

Currently, Windows 10 Home or Pro users in the Release Preview channel can immediately test Copilot, while all Windows 10 users in the market may get this new feature in just a few days or weeks.

Microsoft explained last week that it is "reassessing" its approach to Windows 10 as it nears the end of support for the operating system in less than two years. Microsoft stated that it is making "additional investments" in Windows 10 and may introduce more AI features in the future. However, Microsoft also stated that there will be no major updates to Windows 10.

"This is the final version of Windows 10, which is 22H2, and we won't make any changes to Windows 10," said Aaron Woodman, Microsoft's Vice President of Windows Marketing, in a briefing. "We also won't change the end of support date for Windows 10, which is still October 14, 2025."

However, it is not surprising that Copilot is coming to Windows 10. Windows 10 is still a very popular operating system, while the adoption rate of Windows 11 lags behind. According to the latest reports from Microsoft's internal data, Windows 11 is only running on 400 million devices since its launch two years ago. In contrast, Windows 10 reached this milestone one year after its release and reached 600 million devices a few months after its second anniversary.
