Google Meet New Feature: Automatic Meeting Notes Summary
Google Meet's latest AI feature, "Smart Notes," is now being rolled out to Google Workspace customers with Gemini Enterprise, Gemini Education Premium, or AI Meetings & Messaging add-ons. This feature is similar to Meet's transcription tool, but instead of automatically transcribing each person's speech, it summarizes the conversation for each individual. Google first announced this feature at the 2023 Cloud Next conference.
Unfortunately, this feature currently only supports English speech. However, it seems to alleviate the anxiety of missing important meetings. It automatically records notes in a Google document and attaches the file to the calendar event for future reference. Additionally, it sends the Google document to the meeting organizer and anyone who has enabled this feature.
What if you're late to the meeting? Google states that this new feature also provides a summary of the missed meeting content, allowing you to quickly catch up without worrying about others repeating themselves. If you're using Google Meet's recording and transcription tools simultaneously, the links to these files will appear in the same Google document as the meeting notes.
This feature also sounds like a great assistive tool, especially for individuals like me who struggle with verbal language and note-taking. It may allow them to focus more on the meeting itself rather than having to ask others to repeat themselves multiple times.
Google expects to fully roll out this feature to all Google Workspace customers by September 10, 2024, but cannot guarantee the accuracy of this new feature in Google Meet.
