According to reports, Apple recently acquired DarwinAI, a startup platform focused on detecting defects in printed circuit board manufacturing.
According to insiders, the acquisition was completed earlier this year, but the specific transaction amount was not disclosed. Through this acquisition, dozens of DarwinAI employees will join the Apple family.
DarwinAI was co-founded by four researchers from the University of Waterloo in 2017. Since then, the company has raised over $15 million in funding from industrial giant Honeywell International, the Canadian Business Development Bank, and other investors. With this funding, DarwinAI has successfully developed a machine learning platform specifically for discovering hardware issues in printed circuit boards.
A printed circuit board (PCB) is a flat rectangular panel that carries the core components of electronic devices. Whether it's the motherboard of a personal computer and server, or simple devices like USB flash drives, they all rely on the support of printed circuit boards.
It is worth noting that printed circuit boards are manufactured separately from the electronic components on them. When these electronic components are installed on the printed circuit board, they form the so-called printed circuit board assembly. DarwinAI's platform can automatically detect faults in these assemblies, greatly reducing the manual work required by manufacturers in quality assurance.
As for how Apple will use this technology, it is currently unclear. One possible scenario is that Apple will provide DarwinAI's platform to contract manufacturers responsible for producing components for its devices. These manufacturers can use the software to more efficiently detect faulty parts.
In addition, DarwinAI is also committed to making "artificial intelligence systems smaller and faster." In this regard, DarwinAI's expertise is also valuable to Apple. It is reported that Apple is planning to launch a series of new generative artificial intelligence features, which are expected to be officially unveiled at the WWDC developer conference in June.
In February of this year, there were reports that Apple is developing a new version of the Xcode platform based on artificial intelligence. Xcode is an important tool for developers to write software for Apple's operating system, and the new version of Xcode is expected to include a programming assistant that can automatically generate code for tasks such as testing new development applications.
In addition, Apple is also developing AI-based search boxes in iOS and macOS. According to related reports, the upgraded search box will support users to perform operations in applications using natural language commands, bringing a more convenient experience to users. At the same time, Apple's Keynote presentation tool is also expected to add the ability to create slides using AI.
