Microsoft OneDrive Upgrades Multiple Features to Enhance User Experience

2024-10-09

Recently, Microsoft announced a series of enhancements for its cloud storage service OneDrive, including upgraded search functionality, a brand new mobile application, and support for color-coded folders in Windows File Explorer. These updates are set to roll out over the coming weeks.

OneDrive's search capabilities have been comprehensively enhanced, featuring new filter controls and more detailed search results to help users quickly locate desired files or folders, whether stored in personal OneDrive, shared libraries, or team member folders. Additionally, Microsoft has improved OneDrive's startup speed, delivering a superior performance experience. The search updates are being gradually deployed and are expected to fully reach OneDrive business users by the end of 2024.

Meanwhile, Windows File Explorer now supports color-coded folders within OneDrive. If users previously set color folders in the OneDrive web interface, the corresponding colors will now be displayed in File Explorer. Furthermore, Microsoft plans significant improvements to OneDrive's document library experience by mid-2025 to enhance overall performance and reliability, making it easier for users to navigate, switch, create custom views, and filter large data sets.

For iOS and Android users, OneDrive will also launch a new mobile application. The app will prioritize photos, offering easily navigable albums, people, and collections. Additionally, the app features an enhanced AI-powered photo search function, allowing users to search for photos using natural language, such as typing "dog on the boat" to find relevant images. Moreover, the new app will display user memories, trips, and birthdays on the home screen and enable the import of photos, videos, and documents from other cloud services like Google Drive, Google Photos, and Dropbox.

Currently, the new OneDrive mobile app is being rolled out to Android users, with the iOS version set to launch in November. The AI photo search feature will initially be available to Microsoft 365 subscribers and is expected to be widely available by the summer of 2025.

Additionally, Microsoft announced that the Copilot feature is now available to all business users. Copilot Agents will also be integrated into OneDrive, offering users customized AI assistant services to meet diverse folder needs.

Since last year, Microsoft has continually added new features to OneDrive, including Fluent design updates, AI-driven Copilot functionalities, folder color coding, and the ability to favorite OneDrive files. Moving forward, OneDrive will continue to introduce further enhancements, such as updating the photo experience to cover all platforms (PC, Web, and macOS) and integrating Microsoft Designer into OneDrive for users to quickly edit photos.

Regarding AI functionalities, OneDrive will offer personalized views in the future, automatically grouping files and photos based on time, interests, or collections. Additionally, Microsoft plans to integrate one-click AI operations, such as summaries and file comparisons, directly into File Explorer and macOS Finder.
