OpenAI Updates Advanced Voice Mode to Enhance AI Voice Assistant Interaction Experience

2025-03-25

On Monday, OpenAI rolled out an update to its Advanced Voice Mode, an AI-powered voice feature within ChatGPT designed to facilitate real-time conversations. The update aims to make the AI assistant more human-like and reduce interruptions while users are speaking.

Manuka Stratta, a postdoctoral researcher at OpenAI, announced the changes in a video shared on the company’s official social media channels.

This update addresses a common issue with AI voice assistants: they often interrupt users when they pause to think or take a breath.

Free users of ChatGPT can now access the updated Advanced Voice Mode, which allows them to pause during conversations without being interrupted. Meanwhile, paying subscribers—including those with OpenAI’s Plus, Teams, Edu, Business, and Pro plans—will experience fewer interruptions and notice enhancements in the AI assistant's personality.

A spokesperson from OpenAI told TechCrunch that the new AI voice assistant for paying users delivers responses that are more direct, engaging, concise, specific, and creative.

The improvements to Advanced Voice Mode come amid growing competition in the AI voice assistant market.

Sesame, a startup backed by Andreessen Horowitz and founded by Oculus co-founder Brendan Iribe, has recently gained attention for its natural-sounding AI voice assistants, Maya and Miles. Additionally, major players are entering the space more aggressively, with Amazon preparing to release a version of Alexa powered by a large language model (LLM).
