Apple WWDC Conference Set to Unveil, New Artificial Intelligence Strategy and Features Awaited

2024-05-27

Although Apple started late in the field of artificial intelligence, it plans to announce its new AI strategy and features at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). As a leading company in the tech industry, investors are eagerly anticipating this annual event, which will take place from June 10th to 14th. Bloomberg columnist Mark Gurman has even revealed details of the AI products that Apple may unveil at the event.

In the face of fierce competition in the field of AI, Apple, as a latecomer, may take a different technological path. Gurman pointed out in the latest issue of "Power On" newsletter that Apple may focus on developing tools that ordinary consumers can easily use in their daily lives.

Gurman said, "Apple's strategy is to attract users with practical needs, while leaving some cooler features to other companies." After major AI announcements from tech giants like Microsoft, Alphabet, and OpenAI, Apple wants to convince consumers and investors that it has also made exciting progress in the field of AI, but it does face significant challenges.

So, what AI features will Apple showcase at WWDC?

Gurman revealed that Apple may spend a lot of time introducing its AI-related features, with Project Greymatter being the core of the new strategy. This project includes a series of AI tools that Apple plans to integrate into core applications such as Safari, Photos, and Notes, as well as enhance notification and other operating system functions.

When it comes to handling AI features, Gurman stated that most functions that do not require high computing power will run directly on devices, while those that require stronger computing power will be "pushed to the cloud" for processing. The functions on devices will be supported by iPhone, iPad, and Mac chips released in the past year or so, while the cloud components will be powered by the M2 Ultra chip located in data centers.

According to Gurman's leaks, the new features being developed this year include:

· Transcription of voice memos

· AI-based photo restoration

· Improved search speed

· Enhanced Safari web search

· Automatic suggested replies for emails and messages

· Upgraded Siri personal assistant - based on Apple's own large-scale language model, making interactions more natural.

In addition, Gurman also pointed out that a more advanced Siri may appear on the Apple Watch to assist users in performing various outdoor tasks. Developer tools, including Xcode, are also receiving AI-enhanced features.

Apple will also introduce generative AI into the creation of emojis, developing software that can create custom emojis based on user input. Additionally, the company is working on improving the main screen of the iPhone by providing users with a more convenient user experience through missed notification and brief review of personal messages, as well as integrating web pages, news articles, files, notes, and other forms of media content.

However, Gurman also noted that most of Apple's AI features will be "pure catch-up" and emphasized that "there is no breakthrough here." He pointed out that Google already has many similar AI features in its Pixel devices, while Samsung is using Google's Gemini technology. Nevertheless, with its strong brand influence and large user base, Apple still has the potential to achieve remarkable results in the field of AI.
