As the global PC market continues to expand, it is projected to reach $247.1 billion by 2028, with the mid-range segment becoming a key battleground for major manufacturers. In this context, Qualcomm has announced its plan to introduce the Snapdragon X chipset into the mid-range Windows laptop market, aiming to disrupt the current landscape and increase its market share.
At CES 2025, Qualcomm officially unveiled the Snapdragon X chipset designed for PCs. Manufactured using advanced 4nm technology, this chipset is tailored to meet the needs of mainstream and budget-conscious laptop users. While its performance may not match that of higher-end variants like the X Plus or X Elite, the Snapdragon X maintains a high standard in design and features an 8-core Oryon CPU from Qualcomm, capable of reaching clock speeds up to 3.0GHz.
Qualcomm claims that the Snapdragon X delivers 163% faster performance at the same power consumption compared to competitors, significantly bolstering its competitive edge in the mid-range PC market. Additionally, the chipset includes a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to accelerate AI-related tasks, further enhancing its market position.
Notably, the Snapdragon X is part of Microsoft's Copilot+PC series of AI-driven PCs, enabling the use of built-in AI applications such as Recall and Click to Do, providing users with a smarter and more convenient experience.
In terms of compatibility, the Snapdragon X excels, supporting advanced technologies like LPDDR5x memory, Bluetooth 5.4, Wi-Fi 7, and USB 4 (40Gbps), along with offering 5G connectivity options. It also supports up to three external UHD (4K) displays at refresh rates up to 60Hz, delivering clearer and smoother visuals.
Battery life is another strong suit for the Snapdragon X, offering multiple days of usage on a single charge. Compared to competitors, devices equipped with Snapdragon X can last twice as long. According to Qualcomm, during Netflix streaming tests, new test PCs powered by Snapdragon X outlast comparable Intel Core i5 laptops by 106%, ensuring extended usage without frequent recharging.
Qualcomm emphasizes that devices featuring the new chipset will be priced around $600, making them more affordable compared to other high-end chip-based laptops. Major manufacturers such as Acer, Asus, Dell Technologies, HP, and Lenovo are expected to release PCs powered by Snapdragon X in the first quarter of 2025, providing consumers with additional choices.
Qualcomm states, "The Snapdragon X is the ideal solution for students, freelancers, and budget-conscious consumers seeking reliable and powerful laptops." This statement underscores Qualcomm's deep understanding and precise positioning in the mid-range PC market.
Despite fierce competition from rivals like AMD and Intel, Qualcomm remains undeterred. Industry reports indicate that Qualcomm held only 0.8% of the PC market share in Q3 2024, but the company asserts that there are already 60 laptops powered by Snapdragon X-series chips either in production or development, with over 100 expected to launch by 2026. This move highlights Qualcomm's firm commitment and determination in the mid-range PC market.
With the Snapdragon X chipset poised for launch, Qualcomm is set to ignite a new wave of competition in the mid-range PC market. The future will reveal which player emerges victorious in this intense rivalry.
