OpenAI has announced the acquisition of the Chat.com domain and will automatically redirect it to its AI chatbot, ChatGPT. Previously, this domain was owned by Dharmesh Shah, the founder and CTO of HubSpot.
Reportedly, Shah purchased Chat.com for $15.5 million in early 2023. However, just a few months later, he announced the sale of the domain without disclosing the exact sale price or the buyer’s information. Nonetheless, he confirmed that the selling price was higher than his purchase price.
When acquiring Chat.com, Shah posted on LinkedIn expressing his belief that chat-based user experiences would become the next major trend in the software industry. He argued that interacting with computers or software through natural language interfaces would become more intuitive, thanks to advancements in Generative AI. Before the sale, Chat.com briefly redirected to a page explaining his reasons for the purchase.
Subsequently, Shah confirmed on the social media platform X that OpenAI was the buyer of Chat.com and hinted that the acquisition was made in the form of shares rather than cash.
This acquisition aligns with OpenAI’s recent rebranding strategy. In September, OpenAI announced a series of new reasoning models beginning with “o1,” aiming to adopt a more intuitive and coherent naming approach to better convey their work.
It is noteworthy that Chat.com is a long-standing domain, registered in September 1996. Last year, it was acquired by Shah at a high price, making it the second most expensive domain transaction reported publicly at that time.
Although Chat.com now redirects to ChatGPT, OpenAI has not disclosed the specific acquisition amount, and the domain transfer does not appear to involve changes to ChatGPT’s hosting services. Therefore, this may not signify a change in OpenAI’s branding.
This acquisition further enriches OpenAI’s portfolio of high-value domains and showcases its ongoing investment and strategic vision in the field of artificial intelligence.
